1 Year of Kiezbox 2.0: 3 Learnings
What would not work in the event of a crisis? Since the beginning of 2023, the model project Kiezbox 2.0 has been testing an alternative, power-autonomous communication network.
It is especially important to ensure access to critical infrastructures such as emergency calls and crisis communication in extreme situations and to provide information during a crisis.
The Kiezbox 2.0 concept builds a so-called mesh network using smart boxes installed on Berlin rooftops. In an emergency, citizens can log into this Wi-Fi. During regular operation, the Kiezbox 2.0 is intended to measure environmental data and serve as an information portal. To find out which environmental data is of particular interest to the city's population, the Kiezbox 2.0 team conducted public surveys. The Kiezbox 2.0 is a pilot measure of the strategy "Gemeinsam Digital: Berlin" (GD:B).
Ninett Rosenfeld from the Kiezbox 2.0 team at the Technlogiestiftung Berlin (Technology Foundation Berlin) lists the key learnings from one year of Kiezbox 2.0 in her workshop report. (Report in German only).
