Innovations for the future – this is how Berlin is positioning itself for the next 10 years
“Pioneering Tech for Freedom” is the guiding principle of the new Deep Tech Berlin Agenda (DTBA). The Berlin Senate has thus adopted the strategic framework for the city’s technology-oriented innovation policy for the next ten years.
The Deep Tech Berlin Agenda sets the guidelines for technological innovation in and from Berlin. The aim is to foster future technologies and to ensure that pioneering applications emerging from research are transferred more quickly into economic practice. The DTBA can thus drive forward the development of new technological applications in the capital and help position Berlin to meet current and future challenges. It complements the Joint Innovation Strategy 2035 of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg (InnoBB 2035) and provides a Berlin-specific contribution to the German High-Tech Agenda (HTAD) as well as to the European vision of technological sovereignty.
The Deep Tech Berlin Agenda pursues three central objectives:
- Strengthening Berlin’s position as Europe’s leading deep-tech hub
- Improving the transfer of research into practical applications and start-ups
- Creating optimal framework conditions for the growth and scaling of companies
The Agenda focuses on five key technologies that are to be specifically developed further:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Biotechnology
- Microelectronics, Photonics & Quantum Technologies
- Advanced Materials & Manufacturing
- Software Technologies
The DTBA is complemented by a comprehensive catalogue of measures, which include, for example, the expansion of technology transfer and real-world laboratories, stronger networking between science, industry and public administration, and the recruitment of skilled workers. The aim is also to enhance Berlin’s international visibility as a centre of innovation.
The DTBA was developed by the Berlin Senate departments responsible for business and science, in collaboration with stakeholders from academia, research, business and public administration, as well as industry associations. As a learning strategy, it is subject to continuous refinement and is supported by a monitoring process.
