Berlin Launches GovTech Berlin Unit

As part of its efforts to digitize its public administration, Berlin is relying on a new platform: The GovTech Berlin Unit specifically matches the needs of Berlin’s public administration with companies from the capital’s GovTech ecosystem, thereby serving as a bridge between the two.

Berlin’s public administration includes numerous processes that are inefficient, paper-heavy, and technologically outdated. At the same time, the capital’s vibrant start-up and tech scene is seeing a growing number of innovative digital solutions specifically tailored to the needs of the administration. These include solutions for data management, processing applications, and internal communication. What Berlin has lacked until now, however, is a body that specifically brings new technologies and innovations together with the Berlin administration.

This is where the GovTech Berlin Unit somes in, founded at the end of April by the Berlin Senate Chancellery in collaboration with GovTech Germany. As a central point of contact for all government agencies in the State of Berlin, the Unit aims to systematically identify and evaluate innovation needs within the administration. It then specifically searches the Berlin GovTech ecosystem for technologies capable of solving concrete problems within government agencies. The unit thus sees itself as a bridge-builder between the Berlin administration and companies specializing in digital solutions for the public sector.

The State of Berlin has linked five specific goals to the GovTech Berlin unit:

  1. The Berlin administration is to be connected with the (Berlin) market.
  2. Innovations are to be implemented more quickly.
  3. Legality and compliance should be ensured.
  4. Cultural change and an innovation-friendly mindset are to be promoted.
  5. GovTech products should be sustainably introduced and scaled within the Berlin administration.

In addition to providing guidance in the growing GovTech market and professional access to innovative products, the GovTech Berlin unit also offers administrations the opportunity to test digital solutions in practice. Together with co-founder GovTech Deutschland, the unit also supports the subsequent implementation process. Berlin-based GovTech companies, in turn, are given the chance to test their solutions in pilot projects and implement them on a larger scale. (vdo)
