Low-Energy Housing Estate Märkisches Viertel

Between 2008 and 2015, GESOBAU AG converted the Märkisches Viertel into Germany's largest low-energy housing estate. This means comprehensive modernisation measures and an investment of 560 million euros in thermal insulation and modern standards for 13,500 apartments. Through the energetic modernisation, the CO₂ emissions in the large housing estate were reduced by more than two thirds from 43,000 tons to only 11,000 tons of CO₂ per year. Since 2014, the quarter's remaining energy requirements have been supplied by a biomass cogeneration plant, making it the first large housing estate in Germany to have a CO₂-neutral energy balance.

The successive complete modernisation is paying off for the tenants and their apartments in the Märkisches Viertel. The modernisation was carried out with almost no warm rents for the residents. GESOBAU has thus set an example worldwide.
