European Data Portal

The pan-European Open Data-Portal enables the function of rapidly finding and reusing open data from 39 european countries. The European Commission aims to contribute to this, by releasing the economic potential of open data in a more efficient way. The EU estimates a profit of 40 billion Euros per year, which is generated by 28 member countries using open data. In addition to that,  the administrative processes and the civic opportunities of participation benefit from the use of open data. Being a part of an international consortium, Fraunhofer FOKUS also participates in the development of Open Data-Portals. As they are one of the leading technical partners, FOKUS develops key components such as the data register and harvesting mechanisms. Using metadata, the register allows a central access to data sets of numerous european databases. With the help of harvesting the databases are regularly combed through for open datasets.
