Deutsches Institut für Urbanistik (Difu)

The German Institute of Urban Affairs gGmbH (Difu) is a research and consulting institution for German cities founded in 1973 on the initiative of the German Association of Cities. More than 100 cities support the institute's work as donors. The federal government (BMVI) and the state of Berlin are important institutional sponsors. With a staff of about 160, Difu is the largest municipal science institute in the German-speaking world, with offices in Berlin and Cologne.

As a joint scientific institution of German cities, Difu attaches particular importance to the constant exchange of information - both with academia and with municipal practice - and provides a broad range of services based on interdisciplinary know-how. Difu supports municipalities in the form of workshops, lectures and specifically prepared information on current problems. The institute's own as well as external research results are communicated to municipal practice.
